Our upcoming conference Time Machine might be the most exciting thing happening in Austin this month, but it’s hardly the only thing. After spending the day at Time Machine learning about the future of AI, here are a couple things to do in Austin while you’re in town––although we can’t guarantee that you’ll have a better time than you did at Time Machine.
All of the Lights
The Trail of Lights is the place to go for a quick immersion in the charm of Austin. Held in Zilker Park, the Trail of Lights is the city’s largest holiday tradition, attracting thousands of people every year to 40 displays made of two million lights. There’s also delicious local food––including some of the best tacos in Austin. As if you needed another reason to go, Thursday, December 14 will feature local musical talent from the self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World. Best of all: It’s free!
(Interested in holiday cheer closer to downtown? Check out the elaborate gingerbread house display at the Four Seasons, pick up a gift at the unique Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, or go ice-skating on top of Whole Foods.)
Get that Coin
Looking for an easy and fast way to buy and sell bitcoins? Austin has 12 bitcoin ATMs that you can visit while you’re in town. In 2014, Austin became the first city in the U.S. to have a Robocoin Bitcoin ATM machine, and has since become one of the hottest bitcoin cities.
Eat Like a Texan
While standing in the hours-long line for Franklin Barbecue is likely not an option, there are plenty of other restaurants to check out downtown. Lambert’s is a good option for smoked meats, Jo’s Coffee offers a caffeine jolt and essential breakfast tacos, La Condesa offers upscale Mexican food, and Easy Tiger is a lively bakery and beer garden to unwind with a pint and a pretzel.
Analog Entertainment
While Austin is a tech city, it also provides ample opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, like running around the Hike & Bike trail or taking in the view at this scenic spot. Catch the sunrise before your long day of activities at Time Machine, or stay an extra day and catch the sunset––we’ll be happy to provide further recommendations!
